Kendare Blake – Girl of Nightmares (Anna #2) | Review

It’s been months since the ghost of Anna Korlov opened a door to Hell in her basement and disappeared into it, but ghost-hunter Cas Lowood can’t move on.
His friends remind him that Anna sacrificed herself so that Cas could live—not walk around half dead. He knows they’re right, but in Cas’s eyes, no living girl he meets can compare to the dead girl he fell in love with.
Now he’s seeing Anna everywhere: sometimes when he’s asleep and sometimes in waking nightmares. But something is very wrong…these aren’t just daydreams. Anna seems tortured, torn apart in new and ever more gruesome ways every time she appears.
Cas doesn’t know what happened to Anna when she disappeared into Hell, but he knows she doesn’t deserve whatever is happening to her now. Anna saved Cas more than once, and it’s time for him to return the favor.

I don’t think it was necessary for Anna to be a duology. Anna Dressed in Blood would be a great standalone and this book just shouldn’t have existed. I did enjoy it, I just didn’t really see the point in it. It feels like the author didn’t want to say goodbye to these characters and this world so she wrote a sequel and put a ton of new stuff in it. However, I love the cover a lot and I’m glad Anna is not sitting alone on my shelf. Now I have two of them to look pretty and awesome.

As I already said, the whole plot was pretty unnecessary, but it was still quite enjoyable. I feel like Cas’ depression and missing Anna dragged a bit and it took way too many pages to actually get to the main plot – going after Anna. However, when we finally got to that point, I started to enjoy this book a lot more because finally something interesting was happening. I especially liked the part in Suicide Forest, it was creepy and amazing at the same time. It was definitely a highlight of this book. I don’t really know how I feel about the ending, though. I expected something like that, but it feels kind of riddicolous that he went through all that shit and then… I don’t want to spoil anything, but if you read the book, you know where I’m going with this.

I did not like Cas very much in this one. He was too whiny and annoying at times. He was self-pitying himself and he was constantly depressed about Anna, but it took him so long to actually do something about it. He just lost his badassness (is that even a word?) from the first book. Carmel was even more whiny than Cas and I just couldn’t stand her in this book. Did not like her decisions at all. Thomas is the only character who didn’t disappoint me in this book. He stayed cool and awesome as he was and I like him a lot. Definitely my favourite character. Jestine is a new character who I really liked from the moment she appeared. She is super-badass and I ship her and Cas a lot. They would be such a cute couple because she brought the old Cas back and their relationship is just awesome.

Writing style didn’t change very much from the first book and it’s still easy to read. I liked all the jokes and all the funny moments in this book, even though the premise of this book is neither happy or funny. This book was quick and easy read and I quite enjoyed it. The first part was a bit slower, but the book was action-packed from the beginning and I very quicky got into it. Also, I very much like the creepines and the atmosphere in Kendare Blake’s books.

If you read Anna Dressed in Blood, I don’t really know if I recommend you this seuel or not. It’s up to you, because not everyone is going to love this book. However, if you haven’t even started Anna duology, I definitely recommend you to do so because it’s very entertaining and quick read.
